The Thrill of Hope – Good News of Great Joy

Biblical joy is an inner state of being NOT determined by our external circumstances, but rather by our eternal destiny. It finds its source in Christ alone and born of the Holy Spirit by faith, and we should be the most joyful people on the planet because we have the very joy of Jesus himself.
Discussion Questions for Growth Groups
  1. Discuss this definition of biblical joy - “a deep and abiding inner rejoicing which was promised to those who abide (make their home with) in Christ. It does not depend on circumstances because it rests in God’s sovereign control of all things.”
  2. Have you seen this at work in your life or in the lives of other saints you have known? Describe how you’ve seen it play out.
  3. What would you say are some of the benefits of embracing biblical joy?
  4. What counterfeit sources of joy have you pursued in your life?  How did that turn out?
  5. How can the “mega” joy of Jesus change the way you live in a fallen world? How might it affect your relationships to other people, to wealth, the health, to service, to your work,…?
  6. Review and discuss the following pathways to cultivating biblical joy:
  •  Pondering our hope of future glory brings joy (1 Peter 4:13)
  • The Word of God brings joy (John 15:11).
